AFB Smear And Culture

Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear and culture is used to identify mycobacterial infections and to diagnose tuberculosis (TB).

This test is ordered when symptoms of TB or mycobacterial infections are found. These symptoms may include chronic cough, loss of weight, high fever, weakness, and chills. This test can also be ordered by doctors to monitor the treatment of TB.
