Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibody (ASMA) test is conducted to diagnose autoimmune hepatitis and to distinguish this hepatitis from other causes of injury to the liver. This is a blood test that measures the amount of ASMA in the blood. ASMA is a form of protein that is produced by the immune system.

It is ordered when the patients show symptoms of autoimmune hepatitis. High levels of ASMA in the blood are suggestive of autoimmune hepatitis. Low levels of ASMA can be a sign of compromised immune system.
