Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

Glucose tolerance test:

Your doctor will measure the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood 2 hours after you drink a liquid with a large amount of sugar in it. A normal result is when your blood sugar level is measured to be anywhere below 140 mg/dL. However, two possible “abnormal” results exist with this test:

1) If the blood sugar level is greater then 200 mg/dL you are considered to have Diabetes.
2) If the blood sugar level is greater then 140 mg/dL, but less then 200 mg/dL you are at in a range that doctors label at risk for developing Diabetes.  Sometimes this is referred to as "pre-diabetes."

Typically, this test is considered the gold standard of diagnosing diabetes and is commonly ordered by doctors in patients with a high fasting blood sugar level (to confirm a diagnosis of Diabetes), in patients with symptoms of diabetes and also in pregnant patients to help diagnose gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy).
