Amputation

Amputation: the surgical removal of a portion of your body, usually pertaining to removal of all of or part of an upper or lower extremity (arm or leg). 


Amputations are performed for a variety of reasons including such things as:



  • Infection/Gangrene

  • Trauma/severe injury that cannot be repaired.

  • Vascular disease

  • Malignancy/Cancer

  • Improving function

Amputations are performed by medial doctors from a variety of backgrounds including general surgeons, orthopedic ourgeons and vascular surgeons.


Following amputation, people can be fit with a prosthetic to help restore function and independence.
