Appendectomy

Appendectomy: The surgical removal of your appendix peformed for treatment of Appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix).

Appendectomies can be performed laparoscopically or open.  At this point in time, Laparoscopic appendectomies are much more commonly performed in comparison to open appendectomies.  In general, open appendectomies are only peformed when something goes wrong with the laparoscopic surgery or your appendicitis is so severe it is safer to make a larger incision and obtain better visualization of your anatomy.

In laparoscopy, very small incisions (called portals) are made on your abdomen (belly) and air is pumped into abdomen allowing room for your surgeon to work and see.  Small instruments are used through these portals to remove your appendix.  In comparison, a single larger incision is required in an open appendectomy. Typically over the lower right quadrant or portion of your abdomen.

Recovery from laparoscopic appendectomy is generally very quick.  Some people go home the same day as surgery while others may stay a night or two depending on any complications they may have with surgery or with recovery.  Open appendectomy often requires a longer recovery then laparoscopic due to larger incisions and more pain.
