Prevacid is a medication used for treating and preventing stomach and intestinal ulcers and also for treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), more commonly referred to as reflux disease or heartburn.

Prevacid can also be used for treating erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid) and other conditions caused by excessive stomach acid including GERD or reflux disease.

Prevacid reduces the amount of acid (Hydrochloric acid or "HCL") produced in the stomach. It is not usually used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms as Prevacid may take up to 4 days for full effect.  In general, this medication should not be given to children younger that one year.
